Originally designed to remove coal residue from wallpaper—a common household problem during an era when coal heating was widespread—this putty-like substance served a purely practical purpose for over two decades.
From Cleaner to Creative Toy
When vinyl wallpaper was introduced and became popular in the 1950s, it made the traditional wallpaper cleaner obsolete virtually overnight, threatening the future of the McVicker family business. However, fate intervened when McVicker's sister-in-law, Kay Zufall, a nursery school teacher in New Jersey, discovered the compound's remarkable potential as a safe, pliable modelling material for children. She noticed how easily children could mould and shape it, and how it sparked their creativity without the mess or toxicity of traditional clay.
The Birth of an Icon
Recognising this opportunity, the product was reformulated, rebranded as "Play-Doh," and strategically marketed to schools and educational institutions. The timing proved perfect—parents and educators were seeking safe, creative play materials for the post-war baby boom generation. Play-Doh's success accelerated when it was demonstrated on influential children's television programmes like "Captain Kangaroo" in 1957, bringing it into homes across America and eventually worldwide.
